This August I will be spending the whole month in Denmark with the rest of Bristol Print Collective on an artist residency at Funen Printmaking workshop (Fyns Grafiske Vaerkste). In October 2016 we took a research trip to Denmark and visited the wonderful, warm and welcoming studio in Odense. We loved the ethos and general feeling the studio has, opening its doors to the general public to spread the joy of the printed mark. Once back in the UK we had a yearning desire to go back. We applied to become members of the studio, and was offered an invitation of a residency! I am very excited for this opportunity and cannot wait to fully immerse myself in my practice in the beautiful fairy tale town of Odense.
To continue our connection with the studio we are inviting a studio member from Funen Print Workshop to take part in a residency exchange with us and visit Bristol in 2018. We will connect the artist with the Centre for Fine Print Research at UWE and Spike Print Studio. We want to offer the opportunity for other artists and students studying printmaking to learn about Funen Print Workshop and to exchange ideas and processes with an artist from another culture. To make this happen we have created a kickstarter campaign. In return for your support there are a selection of rewards in return! During the exhibition 'Bristol Print Collective' will be running a series of printmaking workshops. If you are free do come along and see a great exhibition and have fun learning fun printmaking skills! Over the past few months I have been using archival documents from the Bristol Record Office to support the research I have been doing for my MA in multidisciplinary printmaking at UWE. Being new to Bristol my project began using physchogeography to explore the city and to start discovering the remnants of abandoned decaying buildings. A moment of serendipity occurred whilst wandering through the new Wapping Wharf development site. A curious dwelling caught my eye due to the monumental significant feeling it contained. I was captivated by the remaining fragments, the ramshackle bricks, the rickety window sockets, rotting façades, the repossession by Mother Nature and the overall fragility and vulnerability of the form. The physical incompleteness of the building, invited me into the decomposing formation, to explore it further. My curiosity encouraged me to pull back the metal fencing and investigate the internal casing. To my delight the inside of this moldering form contained just as much tension and enchantment as the outer shell. Through the viewings of old architect site maps my discoveries denote that this discarded spot used to be part of the New Gaol, an old prison dating back to the early nineteenth Century. I began with sketching possible compositions to later produce a series of intaglio prints from. These prints along with sketches and a selection of copper plates will be on display at the Record Office until September. I've been selected to take part in Edition 2 at 44AD artspace. If you find yourself in Bath, pop in and view a diverse selection of prints!
I am part of Bristol Print Collective, come and see our latest body or prints relating to Bedminster and its history. Free fun workshops for all whilst we are open. Come and have fun and get inky!
